This study aims to demonstrate how a cognitive tool, named conceptual blending theory, can be applied to an analysis of irony in literary texts. After reviewing previous studies on verbal irony, it applied a revised version of Coulson’s (2005) cognitive analysis of irony to a literary text. Joyce’s “The Sisters” from Dubliners was chosen for this purpose, following Lee’s (2015) argument that Joyce’s Dubliners should be understood and studied in relation with irony, and four ironic situations surrounding the unnamed boy narrator have been analyzed based on conceptual blending theory. One input space consists of a scenario regarding reality which the author wants to reveal, and the other input consists of a scenario, including the desired elements which the character expects or a common misbelief has. The case of ironic inversions of roles is also observed and analyzed. This study shows that conceptual blending theory has successfully explained how the irony occurs and how the readers understand it.
