As a literary genre, the ‘morality play’ was used by the 15th century medieval church in England to teach what Christians would be required to know in order to attain salvation. In the late medieval period, the morality play was a fairly rich genre which flourished under church and civil authorities as it was thought to teach moral values through amusing dramatic scenarios. Everyman is a late representative of this kind of medieval drama, and is now widely recognized as an excellent example of the genre’s acknowledged dramatic impact and didactic efficacy. As a result, it is the one most frequently performed morality plays in modern times. The ultimate point of 15th-century morality plays is religious education. In Everyman, moral lessons are conveyed through allegory and personified abstractions that stand for human qualities such as Good Deeds, Knowledge, and so on. In Everyman, these tropes are seen on stage in the summons of Death, the conflict of virtues and vices, good and evil. In these respects, this paper examines the significance of Christian death in Everyman in terms of the morality play of the late 15th century. Everyman is wholly concerned with one moment infused with intense emotional impact; the coming of Death, and the emphasis on Everyman’s dilemma in terms of human time and his final realization exploit a basic audience response. The play presents the established trope of dying as a moral and religious event. The ‘Summons of Death’ in Everyman teaches the central figure and the audience together to learn in a new way, invoking the ‘memento mori’.
