Russian “camp” literature established itself as separate genre and consequently has become a successful tool for understanding Russian poetry. This article, while expanding on other analytic works, mainly focuses on political prisoners (or camps for political prisoners) and literature they produced while facing the evils of prison camps, focused on life at a camp as a microcosm of human existence and portrays the camp’s criminals as a variety of ordinary people. For the purpose of this article, two novels with “camp” themes were selected and compared: House of the Dead, written by the well-known Russian novelist Dostoevsky in the nineteenth century; and The Zone, written by Russian short-story writer Dovlatov during the Soviet era. These authors were chosen with the purpose of expanding the view on Russian “camp” literature, a view which currently mainly focuses on novels written by Solzhenitsyn and Shalamov. The importance of this article is that it shall become the first comparative analysis of novels written by Dostoevsky and Dovlatov undertaken in Korea.
This study has been focused not on physical aspect of prison life, that can be simply called “survival”, but on “play” that presents metaphysical aspects of prison life in House of the Dead, which correlates with Tolstoy’s theme of Resurrection, is treated as an “encyclopedia that shows all people’s abilities”, and The Zone, based on the presumption that “people are hell”, points out humanized rather than civilized morals imposed not only on prisoners but also on guards. The analysis of these two literary works establishes a new paradigm in study of “camp” literature and overcomes the limits of current “camp” literature articles.
