The writing style of Sergei Dovlatov in recent decades has attracted the attention of many critics and specialists, whose research is carried out from the standpoint of literary analysis his works. There are unreasonably few linguistic works devoted to the work of S. Dovlatov. In this article, we consider the linguistic means of transferring the author's self-esteem in the autobiographical story "The Zone". Thus, we examined the language and writing style of S. Dovlatov and analyzed constructive elements of idiostyle (reception of a language game), sociolinguistic aspects (reflection of the speech of different social groups), and the peculiarities of the concept sphere. Meanwhile, we observed the aspect of ​​the textual modality, which reflects the attitude of both the producer of speech (author) and the subject of speech (character) to the depicted reality, as well as to his own discourse. Textual modality lies at the heart of text formation, which determines the semantics, structure and emotional-evaluative nature of the narrative. The author's attitude to the world and to himself is manifested in the author's assessment of himself as a speaker (writer) and as a person in general. Linguistically expressing the author's self-esteem, the writer places himself in a certain relationship to the world and to the text in the autobiographical story "The Zone".
