In this study, the cognitive meaning of the ‘V+到+一起’ structure was clarified based on the theory of Source-Path-Goal Schema and Container Schema. Additionally, the verbs that appeared in the ‘V+到+一起’ structure were classified in light of mobility characteristics, and the movement method of agent and object was presented as well. Moreover, this study discussed the meaning characteristics of NP that appeared before the ‘V+到+一起’ structure and the spatial meaning of ‘一起.’ The major analysis of this study is described as below.
First, the ‘V+到+一起’ structure can be explained by the Source-Path-Goal Schema in which there are source, goal and path. In other words, the agent and object reach the goal of ‘the same place (一起)’ through the certain movement.
Second, ‘一起’ which have the meaning of ‘the same place’ were used as a spatial metaphor. In other words, ‘一起’ were used as ‘spatial container’ through the metaphorical conceptual concept structure ‘the space is container.’ ‘一起’ is used as the ‘spatial container as the goal,’ meaning that the agent or object reaches the space of ‘一起.’
Third, this study examined the movement method of agent and object involved in the ‘V+到+一起’ structure. In this study, verbs were divided into motion verbs and non-motion verbs, and through the analysis, it is proved that the ‘集合’ verbs were the most-commonly used one in the ‘V+到+一起’ structure. In the ‘V+到+一起’ structure, they convey the meaning of ‘more than two members get together to display certain movement.’ They also combined with the ‘把structure’, ‘被structure’, and ‘來, 去.’
Fourth, ‘一起’ is closely related with the agent and object NP. The agent and object NP were used in diverse areas, and they also affect ‘一起’ to extend its spatial meaning from specific places to abstract places.
