Based on the analysis of BCC conversation corpus, this paper extracts the typical image schemas underlying the conceptualization of "Gao" and examines the semantic expansion of "Gao" through conceptual metaphor theory. The findings of this study highlight the following.
First, as an attribute determined by comparing objects, ‘Gao’ is a concept that requires the existence of two or more objects or criteria for judgment. A typical schema has parts and relationships. The image schema of "Gao" has a trajector(indicator), a landmark(object of comparison), and a standard(median) as basic elements, where the trajector and landmark or the trajector and standard form a relationship through comparison.
Second, the concept of vertical space, which is the prototypical meaning of "Gao", is broadly divided into the concept of "vertical length" and that of "position". In the process of moving from the more prototypical concept of vertical length to that of position through a metaphor, there is an intermediate stage, where the vertical length becomes the background and a point is outlined.
Third, a verticality schema, shaped by experience of the vertical prominence of objects, is ubiquitous in the concept of ‘Gao’. This schema is mapped in the realms of abstract space, quantity, evaluation and control, allowing us to understand the abstract concepts based on their verticality.
Fourth, our experience gives the spatial orientation of ‘Gao’ to a large quantity, a high quality and being controllable. Our experience of stacking things to increase their quantity and height gives them a spatial orientation of ‘Gao’. The degree of quantity represented by the measurement value is the position on the scale schemas with a numerical scale or sequence scale attached to the verticality schemas, whilst the degree of quantity that is difficult to measure is approximated by the position on the verticality schemas. The positive experiences that come from an upright posture give a "Gao" orientation to a favorable state and to the state of being controllable, based on social and physical grounds where hierarchies are established according to the degree of control. The concepts of quality and status are represented by positions on a verticality schema or a scale schema with a hierarchical scale attached to the verticality schema.
