Zhang Ai-ling(1920-1995) is one of the most famous Chinese women writers. Some literary critics places her works on the status that are equal to the ones of Lu Xun(魯迅) who has been called the greatest novelist in modern China. She wrote her most brilliant novels during the Japanese invasion period especially 1943~1945.
But her novels’ topics were neither the anti-Japanese war nor the China’s revolution surrounding her environment. Instead she focused to the ordinary peoples’ every day lives especially love affairs between men and women. She was totally indifferent to the themes such as anti-Japanese war and Chinese revolution then prevailing over the Chinese literary circle. Futhermore she got married to a person who was working under the pro-Japanese regime. So after the anti-Japanese war she was named a pro-Japanese writer. Therefore she was ignored in mainland China from 1949 to 1982. To the present some literary critics diminish her literary accomplishments.
I have been interested in the lives of Chinese new woman such as Xu Guang-ping(許廣平), Bing Xin(氷心), Ding Ling(丁玲), Shi P’ing-mei(石評梅). Though they felt that Chinese women had been lived in the inferior conditions and that needed to be emancipated, they took the Chinese victory against the Japanese invasion as the most urgent task. In comparison with her senior new women writers Zhang Ai-ling didn’t pay attention to the Chinese war and revolution. So I placed those senior woman under the category of 1st generation Chinese new woman and Zhang Ai-ling as 2nd generation Chinese new woman.
In this article I have examined Zhang Ai-ling’s early life and novels as a typical example of 2nd generation Chinese new woman’s case. I have surveyed her early experiments in the ancient-typed patriarchal family life and her short, tragic marriage life and then analysed her novels and essays written in the period 1943~1945. (If nessary cases I also analysed her works written after 1945.)
The conclusions are as follows:
First, her early experiments under the economically impotent ancient-fashioned patriarchal father, who were addicted to opium and kept concubines, made her write the novels that describe the victim womens’ lives of the terrible traditional patriarchal family system.
Second, her short-time unhappy marriage life with a man though literary, dandy one but betrayed her own wife Zhang Ai-ling and carried on with other women also let her give shapes to the male characters of her novels very mean and irresponsible ones.
Third, even though she was indifferent to the war and revolution of China, her popular novels which describe the ordinary womens’ lives under the Japanese rule in themselves dedicated to the advancement of the Chinese womens’ status.
