The purpose of this study is to search for creation-aspects and the meaning of Ito Togai(伊藤東涯)’s Plum Blossom Poetry in eighteen century. Ito Togai who was son of Ito Jinsai was rarely mentioned as a individual study subject.
Although the issue that he was succeeded his father’s study was risen, His study didn’t attract any public attention. For this reason, I try to appreciate an aspect of poetry in 『紹述先生文集』, the collection of Ito Togai’s poems.
Plum Blossom is a traditional material in East Asian Poetry. East Asian intellectuals have in common in literary tradition- ‘Poeticizing plum blossom’. Ito Togai left 1,697 poems. From among these poems, 42 poems are describing Plum Blossom. During his life time, He wrote plum blossom poems. It signifies that Plum Blossom poetry is closely related to his life.
Ito Togai’s plum blossom poetry could be largely classified according to creation attitude and creation subject. ‘Creation attitude’ includes from 賦梅to 尋梅, and ‘Creation subject’ includes from 畵梅 to 尋梅.
His plum blossom poetry purses Qing(淸;lucidity) style. This style is comprehended as a reflection of moral self-consciousness. It shows 18C Japanese literator’s creation consciousness who try to get confusion knowledge and to reconcile morality and writing. It is necessity to look synchronically and diachronically into East Asian plum blossom poetry.
