Seokjojeon is a distinctive Western-style building located in Duksugung Palace which was built in 1900-1910. It was proposed by the chief commissioner of the Daehan Empire, John McLeavy Brown and designed by John Reginald Harding in 1897. Henry William Davidson served as a supervisor and with Brown’s recommendation a man called Lovell came to decorate it. These British people have played the important role in its creation. It is said that Maple & Co., the internationally renowned company since the mid 19th century was in charge of furniture and decoration.
The ground floor is decorated in the 18th century English style; the rooms for the formal function such as the Entrance Hall, The King’s Audience Chamber, and the Banqueting Room as for the conspicuous areas show the Neo-Palladian characteristics to express a grand and luxurious presence. The gilt marble-top hall table draws a particular attention which is in accordance with the ‘Gold-and-White’ scheme of the interior. For social and cozy areas like the Reception Room and the Private Dining Room are furnished in Neoclassical style. Reviving under the historicism in the 19th century, these two representative styles of the first and the second half of the 18th century which are based on classicism exhibit subtile mixture in Seokjojeon. Therefore, the interior of Seokjojeon can be called as ‘Neo-Georgian’ in style.
The furniture setting in Seokjojeon reflect the newly adopted Western manners in ceremony and banquet. Following the new diplomatic courtesy of the Daehan Empire, the formal and luxurious type of chairs in the King’s Audience Chamber show a formal display standing in line, while those in the Reception Room are more freely installed. Since banquet formality has changed from the traditional court banquet to ritual and the separate modern dining party, the new types of furniture such as extending dining tables and sideboards come in use. The sideboard in Private Dining Room which design came from George Hepplewhite, is an example of useful furniture for keeping utensils and serving food. Banquet food as well as new types of furniture are mostly Western and illustrate an aspect of westernization in this period.
Furniture stays in tune with the setting of each room and reflects the tradition and values of Georgian period giving simple and elegant look. Seokjojeon emulates the taste and pride of British culture displayed by the designs of Robert Adam and George Hepplewhite. This proves to show that the decorator wanted to convey the Western outlook and their pride on civilization at the turn of the century.
