In Korea, as the population is aging, solitary death has become a serious social problem. But the problem for the solitary death of elderly should not be limited to personal problems. It is a social problem that we must solve together. Because it is very difficult to solve the problem of solitary death of the elderly, if there is no social support and interest to solve the problem. But research on the solitary death of the elderly are not many.
This study explores the meaning and phenomena of solitary death and makes some suggestions to prevent it. Declaring the church as a social institution, this study delves into the roles the church can play to tackle the social issue.
The author makes two suggestions. First, the church should create a network that offers emotional support to the elderly who live alone. Empathy is a key factor in this project. That is koinonia. Secondly, the church as a diakonia builder should provide safety nets that reach out to the older people who lack personal and social contacts. By connecting emotionally and physically to the elderly the church may contribute to the alleviation of the problem of solitary death.
