During Imperial Japan"s occupation of Korea, the chance discovery in September 1921 of the Tomb of the Golden Crown (Geumgwanchong) in downtown Gyeongju and subsequent excavation and collection of artifacts created quite a sensation because these artifacts offered clear testament to the glory of the ancient Silla dynasty. When the Japanese Government-General of Korea attempted to remove these artifacts to Gyeongseong (present-day Seoul) for storage and exhibition, local residents of Gyeongju, be they Korean or Japanese, strongly opposed this scheme and launched the "Movement to Retain Artifacts from the Tomb of the Golden Crown in Gyeongju." The movement succeeded and, in 1923, these artifacts were housed and exhibited inside the newly constructed "Storehouse of the Golden Crown," which was built in the Gyeongju Historic Site Preservation Society.
This movement can be said to be a rare case of local residents winning a "civil movement" against the Government-General of Korea during Japan"s imperial rule over Korea. Today, however, there is a tendency to view this movement as an "impure" movement that arose under the auspices of rich and powerful Japanese residing in Gyeongju, such as Moroga Hideo (諸鹿央雄), to protect their own local interests. Through a detailed analysis of materials from the Museum of the Government-General of Korea that the National Museum of Korea recently began to release to the public, this paper will reveal that the essence of this movement consists of complex multi-dimensional rationales which should not be reduced to merely a struggle led mostly by Japanese residents to maintain their local interests and, further, that ancestor worship, ethnic consciousness, and pride Koreans living in Gyeongju felt in being descendants of the Silla dynasty greatly contributed to the success of this movement. Simultaneously, this article will show that the success of this movement is historically significant in that it triggered and accelerated important elements in the development of Korean history such as Gyeongju becoming a tourist spot, trafficking in cultural property, and increased ethnic consciousness among Koreans.
