This paper aims to compare two main characters, Manfred in Manfred and Heathcliff in The Wuthering Heights in terms of Byronic Hero. The Byronic hero stands firmly as a resistant individual out of the great hierarchic society. As an utter rebels, they constantly appeal to readers’ sympathy against the unjust curb of that society. They resisted to moral or religious systems in which they find themselves arrested. This transformation can be found most clearly in the passage from Manfred of Lord Byron to Heathcliff of Emily Bronte. They have much in common not only in their physical appearance, in their dark and passionate love, but in their cool reserve or even austerity of manner, in the mystery surrounding them, in the frequent flashes of a guilty conscience. But there is a great important difference between them. Manfred is less sympathetic, he and his crimes are made to appear even more unacceptable by his unrealistic and hypertrophic behavior based on a tone of self-assertion and self-reliance. Heathcliff is a realistic victim of the 19th century British society and a rebel against that society.
