This paper analyzes the orientation of Byeolgungon’ narrative pieces as well as the media strategies it adopted as a magazine intended for the masses. The objective is to show that these pieces of writing are not only correlated to internal factors, such as censorship, since the magazine started up as colonial press, but also to external causes, such as contextual aspects, i.e. cultural transfer. With the title ‘Leisure Pursuits’, Byeolgungon assumed its peculiarity in colonial Joseon when consumer culture had not developed yet. The serial publication of yadam (historical narratives) in Byeolgungon is a clear evidence of cultural transfer as yadam is primordially influenced by the Japanese art of storytelling, shinkangdam.
Unlike Gaebyuk, which was a journal of current affairs, the bibliographical composition and the readership of Byeolgungon clearly show that it was targeted at a common mass that was hitherto marginalized, such as women, proletarians, and youth. Rather than ‘politics and current affairs’, its content largely consisted in various types of writings which came under the label ‘leisure pursuits’, which became the title of the magazine. Moreover, the massive publication of yadam, kidam (anecdotic narratives), and other types of kangdam (storytelling) that imitated the Japanese shinkangdam and was preferred to the pure literature towards which inclined the intellectual readership, also contributed to the popularization of Byeolgungon.
In particular, due to censorship and the political situation of the time, Byeolgungon made use of ‘imagination’ and ‘hypothsis history’ rather than ‘reality’ as a media strategy. As a result, the readers began to break away from the ‘race’ ideology. By employing such a strategy, Byeolgungon eventually monopolized the popular magazine キング(King) of the Japanese Empire where capitalism and consumer culture prevailed, and became an assimilative magazine of the newly born colonial Joseon. The sole internal factor that is the colonization cannot explain the active use of the fresh opportunity, the background of the title ‘Leisure Pursuits’, the peculiarity of the bibliographical composition, and the active utilization of historical narrative. Only when the correlation with the imperialist magazine キング and cultural dynamics are taken into consideration, could the identity of Byeolgungon as well as its significance patently appear.
