This study investigated the concept and characteristics of gray in literature references, its associated images & symbolicity and elements and principles of hair design. In addition, it summarized the intention of hair design, design process, illustration, drawing and design pictures using the images derived by analyzing the visual data such as the Internet media and related photos. The topic of this target design was ‘Gray City.’ Based on the abstract associated images of gray - ‘silence,’ ‘building’ and ‘asphalt,’ three different hair designs were created. In the first hair design titled ‘The Silence of the City,’ the abstract associated image ‘silence’ was derived. The dual aspects of an urban life were expressed with the glowing sunset as a motive based on urbanites’ lowliness and suppressed emotions. In the second design titled ‘Into the Concrete Jungle,’ another associated image of gray ‘building’ was derived. Diverse urbanites’ aspects were expressed through the buildings with different heights. The modern people’s desire in the concrete jungle which is bright all the year round was expressed with the lights of buildings at night as a motive. In the third design titled ‘On the Asphalt,’ the associated image of gray ‘asphalt’ was derived. The endless road and various human emotions which cannot transcend modern people’s uncertain future were expressed, having the paved road with two parallel yellow lines in the middle as a motive. Consequently, a follow-up study will have to be conducted to look into contribution pigment by quantitative analysis using a colorimeter of hairdyes at home and abroad.
