Many critics on Turgenev have surveyed Turgenev’s poetic devices constructing main theme of Turgenev, the Fatal Nature. Some say that Turgenev’s narrative methods have the strong relations with his philosophy of nature and human beings. Some critics maintain that Turgenev frequently uses aphorisms in order to firmly express the complex and unclear human experiences. The other critics maintain that his typical narrative devices are the representation of space and time, the use of language such as double negative and rhetorical figure of the litotes, narration with narrative frame, and mode of characterization.
Even though there are lot of those studies on Turgenev’s poetic devices, it is difficult to find the works on the Turgenev’s use of intertextuality for constructing his main themes. This study focuses on Turgenev’s narrative skill using the musical texts for the constructing the theme of the Fatal Nature.
This study finds out that in 〈On the Eve〉 Turgenev uses seven musical texts, six of them for the description of the psychological mood and explanation of the characters’ certain actions and one of them for the construction of main theme of the novel.
This study maintains that the intellectualistic narrative device using for the music text should be considered one the main narrative devices of Turgenev who has magnificent knowledge of music in his day due to the intimate relationship with Pauline Viardo.
