This study investigates the perception of Aymara 3-way contrast by native speakers of Korean. Perception tests were conducted on two sets of Korean speech stimuli to determine correspondence between Korean and Aymara 3-way contrasts and to know which of the consonantal and vocalic parts is more influential in the perception of Aymara 3-way contrast. A set of manipulated stimuli, as well as a set of 15 spontaneous words, were prepared for the tests. The first syllable of the 15 Aymara bisyllabic words of 3 series of phonation types (plain, aspirated, and ejective) in 5 places of articulation(bilabial, alveolar, palatal, velar, and uvular) were split into consonantal and vocalic parts. And then they were combined to form 9 tokens of CV sequences for each place of articulation. Native speakers of Korean were forced to match Aymara stimuli with one of 12 Korean words which represent 3 series of phonation types (Lenis, Aspirated, and Fortis) in 4 places of articulation (bilabial, alveolar, palatal, and velar). Results showed that the consonantal part is more influential than the vocalic part to the perception of Aymara phonation types. Response analysis showed that Korean subjects tend to match Aymara obstruents to Korean ones in such a way that plain corresponds to Fortis or Lenis, aspirated to Aspirated, and ejective to Aspirated or Fortis, which was also supported by a simulation task of seeking the highest score of correspondence between Aymara and Korean stops on the response data.
