This article examines the notion of God, nothingness, and salvation in Daseok Yu Young Mo, a Korean indigenous Christian thinker, and evaluates his innovative insights and contemporary implications. He understands God and salvation from the perspective of ‘nothingness’, one of the most ultimate concepts commonly found in Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism, which have formulated the matrix of Korean spirituality and culture. In other words, he interprets the Christian doctrine of God and salvation through the East Asian and Korean thoughts. For Daseok, God is “the empty space (허공)” as the ultimate origin of all things and the ultimate reality. Also, he paradoxically describes the name of God as “the One who is present without being (없이 계시는 하나님).” In this way, beyond orthodox dogmatism, Daseok develops an anthropo-cosmological notion of God that overcomes anthropocentrism, anthropomorphism, and dualism of non-being and being, transcendence and immanence. For Daseok, salvation is to return to and to be one with God as the empty space. Therefore, Daseok emphasizes a concomitant self-cultivation of the mind and body and the kenotic practice of emptying the self. Daseok’s notion of salvation includes ontological, epistemological, and ethical dimensions. In the conclusion, based on the theopoetic methodology and intra-textual paradigm of Daseok, this article suggests that religious discourses can be understood as the human endeavor of poiesis, which makes the ultimate reality known and repeatedly represents the experience of the ultimate origin. This understanding of religion opens a significant and radical way to expand the horizon for mutual understanding among religions and to resolve violence that is stimulated by religious tribalism and rigorous dogmatism in the age of multi- religious cultures and societies.
