The purpose of this paper is to suggest a teaching method for enhancing student interpreters" A language, Korean. The majority of graduate schools of interpretation and translation in Korea have Korean language enhancement subjects as part of their curriculum. Yet more often than not, the focus is on training students whose B language is Korean or those who major in both interpretation and translation.
Calling for a pedagogy that focuses on enhancing Korean specifically for interpretation majors, the syllabus presented in this study is based on four teaching principles. First, in-class learning activities should focus on intralingual transfer exercises rather than practicing Korean separately since interpreting is an act of linguistic transfer. Second, given the everyday task of an interpreter, the language transfer activities should combine both written and spoken languages according to number of cases as input and output languages. Third, Korean needs to be dealt with not only as the output but also the input language. To this end, text comprehension and analysis skills are to be taught to help students better their interpreting skills for cases when they are interpreting from Korean into a foreign language. Fourth, the class is to be taught by a professional interpreter and the final weeks of class need to include interlingual transfer activities so that students can apply what they learned thusfar in actual interpreting.
