The term Christian monkhood has a meaning of celibacy or solitude. Such life of a monk can be described as a disconnection from the secular life, a training of abstinence, a deep personal experience with the absolute being and a complete pursuit through own’s personal development. However, a purpose of monkhood is in following the Christ as shown in the Bible. This life can be summarised as abstinence. The abstinence of a monk ca be found in an anchorite St. Anthony’s and a cenobite Pachomius’s monastery. The New Testament’s positive attitude towards celibacy deeply influences the life and theology of Church Fathers.
For Tertullian, Clement, Origen, and Zerome, celibacy was the most important virtue for a disciple of Jesus. Many Church Fathers thought that celibacy helps one understand God intuitively, and that it acts as an important quality of a devoted life. Also mostly importantly it plays an important role in reaching the spiritual completion. Furthermore, celibacy became a holy symbol for clergymen in early Churches. In particular, a celibacy of clergyman meant giving up marriage to truly give oneself to God and become a pious Christian. In the early Church, many understood the life of celibacy as a preparation of God’s kingdom to come. Many ascetic practionners believed that the life in monastery as the safest and the best solution to probles one face in the world. Therefore, in order to live a celibate life, they went and build a life and a small community in the dessert. We call them Anchorites. A life of a monk is living alone in God’s existence. A celibacy was the most ideal method of abstinence in the early Church. The aim of a monkhood is to pray infront of God alone. Therefore, the ideal of celibacy can be understood as a monk praying alone to God. Hence, the life of monk is ideal to carry out the abstinence of Christianity.
