At present, the study of existential sentences is focused on the study of grammar, semantics and pragmatics, or the diachronic study of a literary work of the same period. The contrastive study of the features of existential sentences in different historical periods and their changes is still weak and inadequate.
First of all, the source of this article is the peak of Chinese cultural development in the Song Dynasty and the Qing Dynasty representative works, Zhuzi’s Language Category and Dream of Red Mansions.
Zhuzi’s Language Category is a compilation of Q & A quotations between the famous Chinese Neo-Confucianism, Confucianism master Zhu Xi and his disciples by the Song Dynasty Li Jingde. There are altogether 140 volumes. Zhu Xi"s philosophical thought has a profound and longterm influence on Chinese social, political ideology and culture. At the same time Zhuzi’s Language Category is the most concentrated expression of his thoughts. So the study of the language of Zhuzi is even more important.
Dream of Red Mansions is the famous Qing Dynasty writer Cao Xueqin"s famous novel, which is the head of the four Chinese classical masterpieces, and is also on behalf of the peak of Chinese classical novels language. The book was written in the Qing Dynasty, is in the important transition period from the modern Chinese to the contemporary Chinese. It goes without saying that the importance of its language research.
Then, I made an exhaustive search on all existential sentences those appear in the two works. According to the statistics, there were 973 cases of various types of existential sentences in the Zhuzi’s Language Category and 1038 cases of various types of existing sentences appeared in Dream of Red Mansions.
Finally, the characteristics of the existential sentences are analyzed, their grammatical, semantic and pragmatic characteristics are compared and studied in order to find out the law of variation and development of existential sentences.
