In old stories, most vengeful ghosts resolve their grudge and then disappear from the real world. However, such tendency is not observed in the stories of Legend of Singeomu and Righteous Outlaw Gang Mok-bal. The two beings directly resolve their grudge yet remain in the real world to continue exacting their vengeance based on their grudge. Despite their different backgrounds, including times and regions, the two stories have a common plot in that the father of the person who was killed by the grudge pulls out his son’s body from the coffin and whips them. Yet, while Legend of Singeomu shows continuing vengeance for nothing, Righteous Outlaw Gang Mok-bal does not continue with the act of vengeance but rather releases the grudge at a certain point, thus making the two stories different from each other. This study aimed to explore the structure and meaning of grudge-releasing and mourning of the two vengeful-ghost narratives with distinctive common and different points. To confirm this structure, this study applied the theory of Lacan, one of psychoanalytic research methodologies, that emphasizes the concept of real world and drive, which has the potential to explain more clearly the grudge-releasing structure of the vengeful ghost that crosses the symbolic world into the real world. Because Singeomu’s vengeful ghost is a being that cannot bear a grudge, it cannot be essentially called a vengeful ghost. Singeomu’s vengeful ghost, which has become a vengeful ghost without a reason, can neither release an unjustified grudge nor perform an act of mourning. Since the grudge cannot be released, the ending of Legend of Singeomu is only an endless death that continues without reason. In other words, the vengeful ghost of Singeomu is a driven subject and is seen existing in the real world. The grudge-releasing structure of Righteous Outlaw Gang Mok-bal is in line with the symbolic world order, unlike that of Legend of Singeomu. The vengeful ghost refutes the contradictions of the contemporary society by avenging the local governor, symbolized by his father’s name, in a grudge-releasing fashion. However, the Oedipus complex is destroyed by the castration of the penis, and the entity of the story is alienated. In other words, the direct grudge-releasing structure of the Gang Mok-bal story is to reconstruct the “father’s name” and the cultural order of the then society. Such difference between the two stories is that the vengeful-ghost narrative, which reveals and contradicts the reality’s contradictions, is constantly repeating so far. The vengeful-ghost narrative only constantly crosses into and out of the possibility of the real-world overthrow.
