The purpose of this article is to investigate the characteristics and background of Korean text formation of the Corean Primer (1877), the first Korean language textbook compiled and edited by John Ross, by comparing the Corean Primer with his Mandarin Primer (1876). Comparing the Corean Primer with Mandarin Primer, we found that those two textbooks share similar features; textbook format and structure, contents of each chapter, and arrangement. Moreover, the principles of Roman letters expressing the Korean pronunciation in Corean Primer adopts identical principles that are applied in the Mandarin Primer. The Mandarin Primer follows the European mode of Roman letters transliteration, and this mode is affected by the orthography of English and Scottish Gaelic which is Ross’s mother tongue. Thus, it is true that Corean Primer adopted the text format and structure of the Mandarin Primer. Measuring the ‘sentence similarity’ by comparing the main text sentences with Corean Primer with those of Mandarin Primer, we found that there is 85.24% sentence similarity, which shows high similarity of main texts between the two Primers. Also regarding the fact that Mandarin Primer adopted the structure and format of Western textbooks at the time, the Corean Primer can be evaluated as a textbook that incorporates the aspects of modern Western textbooks, which was groundbreaking at the time.
