This paper examines an alternative community and the ethics of embracing the Other represented in Paula Vogel’s And Baby Makes Seven. Vogel deconstructs the notion of gender imposed by hegemonic heterosexual discourses and presents non-traditional genders and families as counter-discourses that can engender a new community. Vogel’s play dramatizes an alternative family consisting of two lesbians and a gay man to demonstrate that gender is a performative act and that gender discourses are cultural constructs. Using mimetic writing and parody, Vogel defies the authority of patriarchal texts and creates a new narrative that subverts the binarism of patriarchal discourses. Though marginalized in the heteronormative culture, Vogel’s homosexual characters have the ability to transcend all gender boundaries and reconstruct their identity. Their anti-Oedipal community allows the characters’ blocked desire to flow and leads to their mutual bond and becoming. This way, Vogel’s play invites the audience to seek a new ethics of embracing the Other and new possibilities.
