This paper examines the ways in which feminine writing serves as a strategy for representing a subject of desire in Paula Vogel’s Hot ’N’ Throbbing. Vogel demonstrates how patriarchal discourses have oppressed and exploited femininity and makes the audience confront masculine violence on the stage, thus providing the audience with a chance to examine an alternative way of perceiving the discourses. She also dramatizes how a woman can resist patriarchal discourses and disturb the discursive order through mimetic writing, which, according to Luce Irigaray, is a means of entering and occupying the discursive field. In writing erotica for women, Charlene pursues subjective sexuality in which women have control over speaking and writing. In Helene Cixous’s sense, Charlene’s writing can be a mechanism through which women reclaim their sexuality that has been oppressed and distorted by masculine discourses. By letting her daughter go on to complete Charlene’s script, Vogel shows feminine writing will continue in a more hopeful way and open up the possibility of lasting “feminine becoming.” In Vogel’s play, feminine writing provides a generative potential that empowers women to be true subjects of desire, enabling women’s own becoming with the power of open, fluid, and dynamic femininity.
