This study aims to outline two cognitive analytic tools, Mental Space Theory (Fauconnier [1985] 1994) and Conceptual Blending Theory (Fauconnier and Turner 2002), demonstrate how they can be applied in literary text analysis, and finally highlight the relevance of cognitive approaches to literary studies. To explore the mental processes of the readers, the various and ambiguous images of the main character, Maria, and the “manipulative textual strategies” of the author (Norris 1987), James Joyce’s “Clay” has been analyzed in this cognitive framework. Far from proposing new interpretation of “Clay”, this study considers what happens in the minds of readers while reading (Semino and Culpeper 2002, ix-x), based on the accepted interpretation and critical writing by Tindall (1959) and Norris (2003), shows how emergent structure in the blended space can capture the various images of the main character, and discusses that projecting from the blended space into input spaces allow the readers to have a better understanding of the story without being deceived by the narrative.
