This study aims to explore the 2016-17 candlelight revolution in terms of cognitive mechanisms: conceptual metaphor, conceptual metonymy, and conceptual blending. While the candlelight protests went on for over 4 months, news media was flooded with manifestations of aforementioned cognitive mechanisms. Founded on the conceptual metonymy, CANDLELIGHT FOR PERSON, the candlelight protests are conceptualized as gigantic tidal waves. Furthermore, conceptual blending is observed in some political cartoons; the Sewol Ferry sinking disaster and the collapse of the Park regime are blended into a newly elaborated meaning structure. In addition, the most frequently featured photos vividly indicate how the MORE IS UP; LESS IS DOWN and EMOTIONAL INTIMACY IS PHYSICAL CLOSENESS metaphors are non-verbally manifested. Analyzing the 2016-17 candlelight revolution based on cognitive mechanisms buttresses the cognitive arguments that humans’ cognitive activity and its representations are entrenched in our bodily experiences and unconscious metaphorical thinking.
