This paper aims to illustrate the transformation process of Joseoneo Sajeon, the Korean-Japanese dictionary published by the Japanese Government-General of Korea in 1920, during its compilation by comparing the dictionary and its unpublished mimeograph manuscript. The manuscript analyzed in this research is own by the National Library of Korea and thought to be copied around 1914. The focus of the comparison is twofold: the role of deleted Korean definitions in the manuscript and the range of eliminated entry words. As stated in previous research, the initial platform of Joseoneo Sajeon was integration of monolingual and bilingual dictionaries therefore every entry was defined both in Korean and Japanese. Korean definitions, however, were deleted in the very last stage of the compilation process, and the reason and details of the deletion have been unknown. This paper examines relevant documents on Joseoneo Sajeon including Jungchuwon documents and analyzes in which stage and for what Korean definitions were erased. Moreover, this article explores the range of entry words that are eliminated in the dictionary. In Joseoneo Sajeon most of modern neologism included in the previous bilingual dictionaries is excluded while various traditional vocabulary words and idu are involved. In this respect, Joseoneo Sajeon has been referred to as a dictionary reflecting premodern Korea. However, its unpublished manuscript shows a bunch of modern coinage. By comparing Joseoneo Sajeon and its unpublished manuscript, I argued that the purpose and platform of dictionary underwent sudden changes during the last stage of its compilation.
