The purpose of this study was to examine characteristics of peer relationship in accordance with peer status and changes in social network of young children in the mixed-age classroom. Twenty one 4- or 5-year-old children had been observed for 5 months in the free play activities in the classroom.
In this study, the popular child reinforced peer group cohesion in the free play activities and expanded other child’s social network nearby, and the average child formed the open social network with children in friendship and acted as a mediator. The structure of the neglected child’s social network was simple, but showed changes in the peer status and expansion of the social network through interaction with the popular child. The network of the rejected child was different based on forming the mutual relationship with children of any peer status. In addition, a controversial child played a role of mediator for the neglected and the rejected children, which made their activities expanded.
