This study was conducted in the fall semester 2017 to investigate the effects of CALL and MALL on foreign language learning. The study utilized 44 Korean undergraduate learners. All participants ranged in age from 20 to 22, and they were taking a regularly scheduled English course at the time of the study. For the experiments, the participants were divided into two groups: CALL group (n = 22) and MALL group (n = 22). For sixteen weeks, they were given assignments to write a diary in English using a computer or mobile phone. Since this study used the pre-post-test design, before and after the experiments were conducted, writing pre- and post-tests were administered to examine the effectiveness of CALL and MALL. Individual interviews were performed at the end to obtain a broader perspective on the participant’s experience with the study. Paired samples and independent samples ttests were computed. Findings indicate that both two groups significantly developed overall writing skills including language use, vocabulary, and mechanics. In particular, the CALL group outperformed the MALL group in organization, language use, and mechanics. As for content and vocabulary, the two groups revealed no measurable differences. Interview results showed that the participants reported positive perceptions of both CALL and MALL. Based on these findings, pedagogical implications and limitations were drawn.
