Purpose: This study investigates accuracy and the age of acquisition for Korean consonant’s types. Methods: We utilized the data from 160 normally developing children aged 2;6 to 5;5 that were used to develop Assessment of Phonology and Articulation for Children (APAC). Accuracy was measured considering the error patterns, and the age of acquisition was calculated for children achieving the 50% and 80% criterion of accuracy. Results: Older children demonstrated higher accuracy of various consonant’s types such as within-word positions, manners of articulation, places of articulation, and laryngeal types, and the differences between age groups were statistically significant except for alveolars. Excluding affricates, fricatives, and liquid, over 90% of the participants showed 50% criterion of accuracy at the age of 2 and 80% at the age of 3. For affricates and liquid, 50% criterion of accuracy was achieved at the age of 3, while 80% was achieved at the age of 4. For fricatives, 50% criterion of accuracy was achieved at the age of 4, while 80% was achieved at the age of 5. Conclusions: These results illustrate the orders in which Korean consonants are acquired, and can be useful for diagnosis of Speech Sound Disorders.
