This essay categorizes three types of the short(/medium-length) stories of Hwang Sun-won, and then relates these types with specific themes. I determine the criteria for classification as follows : the Temporality which is related with how characters connects with the future, the Relationship between direction of event and image of character, and the Place of presenting specific theme in works.
In chapter two, I discuss on the Segment Narrative connecting with image of character. This type of Narrative focus on the Process[Line] of which character advance facing the planned future[Point]. It is possible say that the planned future narratively signify the direction of event which is influential to the image of character. I sort this type of narrative into two categories according to aspect of which character respond to the planned future. First, I discuss on the Existential image of character which existentially respond to the planned future. Second, I discuss on the Social image of character which strategically coping with the Point, that is task being completed within a certain time limit.
In chapter three, I discuss on the correlation between the Point-oriented Narrative and Theme of Maternalism. Contrary to the Segment Narrative, characters in the Point-oriented Narrative advance toward the unknown future. In this narrative, characters are volitionally confronted with the events forming the unit of narrative in the present. These events[Line] eventually head for the closing section of work[Point] in which the image of character have a decisive effect on the direction of event. At this point, the Maternalisms are manifested in the image of character. I thinks that the works of Hwang Sun-won in which show various aspects of Maternalism scrutinize the Maternalism.
In chapter four, I discuss on the correlation between the Point-oriented Narrative and Theme of Purity. In this type of narrative, characters who keep to predetermined value aim for future. The Temporality of the Narrative is homogeneous considering that the basic positions in life who lead the narrative are not only changeless but endless. Thus in this type of narrative the image of character is immune to the direction of event in any case. On the other hand the direction of event is directly/indirectly influenced by the image of character. I especially focus on the point that characters protect predetermined values as ever, nevertheless the events which spring from the image of character are developed in the direction of being at odds with the world. I define this point as ‘purity’, and then discuss on which the Half line Narrative reveals the theme of aiming at extremity of purity.
