The Cultural Factory Osan (Osan Municipal Art Gallery) has opened an exhibit entitled The Manual: Parts & Labour. This neo-conceptual event starts from artists’ designs that were inspired by materials provided by the exhibit manager. Next, each design laid out in a “how-to”manual. Then, the gallery audience have opportunities to realize the artists’ designs in person only by following their manuals.
The point of this exhibit is to apply the concept of ‘manual’ in industrial fields used for the improvement of efficiency to fine arts. Following the manual of an artwork design step by step, the audience can embody the artist"s ideas using their own labor. It is an experimental concept compared to the existing ideas of arts, requiring cooperation between artists’ ideas and audience’s physical commitment to complete an artwork.
Examining the existential meaning of the manuals represented in this exhibit, this paper aims to interpret the implications of art forms in consideration of labor practices and relationship between ideas and artworks. In addition, this paper will show that such art forms are also a rhetorical phenomenon. Contemporary arts have pursued the non-materialization of subjects, and desired to have more engaging communication with audience. In this sense, The Manual exhibit highlights the role of the secondary artists. The participating citizens of this exhibit are positioned between as the secondary artists realizing the original artists’ designs and audience browsing and interpreting the artists’ ideas. Thus, the citizens play a double role in talking to artists and answering them in the art world.
