This study aims to investigate the acoustic characteristics of schwa appearing in clitics and words. For the purpose of this study, 1,503 phrase data and 300 sentence data recorded by professional voice actors were analyzed. For acoustic analysis, the duration of schwa and F1, F2, F3 values were extracted based on the alignment results in phoneme unit by using EasyAlign (Goldman, 2011), a French automatic alignment program. The results of the study showed that the difference in the duration of schwa, F1, F2, and F3 both in clitics and words, was statistically significant in the phrase data, while F1, F2, and F3 values were statistically significant except for duration in the sentence data. Finally, the results indicate that the schwa in clitics tend to have higher values in frontness, height, and roundness and as having more restricted distribution in F1*F2 dimension compared to those in words. This paper will contribute to further research on the realizations of schwa in different environments as well as to the French pronunciation education.
