The majority of haptic interfaces for virtual reality have been designed for hand interaction. However, one’s feet can be another usual way to interact with the real environment. By using the feet as a way to manipulate the virtual reality, it is necessary to detect the intention of the user (e.g., ground reaction force (GRF), center of pressure (CoP) or acceleration). Although there have been some studies about developing foot devices to detect user’s intention, there were some limitations that they are not able to detect intention for extreme movements (e.g., running or jumping) because of low GRF capacity and weakness to impact. This paper describes foot devices with four GRF sensors, which can measure large GRF and robust to impact, and commercial accelerometer to detect human intention. To keep the user’s motions from being disturbed, GRF and acceleration from the foot device can be transmitted to PC via Bluetooth. We estimated CoP from GRF measured by developed device to investigate the performance of the device and we measured three axes acceleration (anterior-posterior, medial-lateral and vertical directions). Finally, we validated the applicability of the developed device to virtual reality through applying it to simple jumping game.
