In this paper, a numerical study about aerodynamic drag reduction of a vehicle by steady air blowing was performed using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) technique based on OpenFOAM. For the analysis of three dimensional incompressible turbulent flow around a vehicle, SimpleFOAM solver was used in corporate with k-w SST turbulence model.
Steady blowing was applied to the estate model of DrivAer at the end of roof and C-pillar in a tangential direction. The drag characteristics of air jet were investigated according to the injection speed and position. The injection speed is 0.2, 0.4, 0.6 and 1.0 times the vehicle driving speed. As the injection speed increases more energy is transferred to the rear wake, therefore minimum aerodynamic drag is achieved when the injection speed is same as the vehicle driving speed. In case of blowing position, the flow analysis was performed at roof and C-pillar blowing and it was shown that C-pillar blowing is more efficient than roof blowing. The maximum performance improvement was obtained when the air injection position was C-pillar and the injection speed is equal to the vehicle driving speed.
