This paper takes note of the phenomenon, in which concepts such as “neo-mythologism” or “mythologism” are catching on in recent Chinese mythological field. It could be understood that for about a decade since 2004, the concept neo-mythologism presented by mythologists Ye Shuxian and others was a trend, which has then made way for that of mythologism proposed by Yang Lihui since 2014. These two concepts appeared in existing literary criticisms, but the former was used to indicate the signs of the revival of mythology that was noticeable in fantasy fictions, movies, or electronic games, which were immensely popular from the late twentieth century through early twenty-first century, whereas the latter referred to the use and reconstruction of myths in contemporary societies.
This paper was motivated by the need and desire to understand the trend of present-oriented mythology appearing in recent Chinese mythological world, through which to explore the nowness of mythology. For this purpose, the formation of Ye Shuxian’s discourse of neo-mythologism, as well as its development and primary arguments were first examined. His discourse of neo-mythologism has markedly positive aspects in that it expanded the horizon of mythological studies which moved beyond the academic rigorism, pursued its contemporary significance, and further developed the paths of dynamic criticism and creation by underscoring the role of mythology in literary criticism. However, it must be treated with caution in that the concept of “myth” can appear somewhat confusing, as he has broadened the subjects covered by mythology to excess. Hence, in discussing the nowness of mythology, one needs to distinguish between the mythicalness and the appropriation of myths. Another cautionary note is that in emphasizing the so-called “Eastern values” or “feminine values” through his neo-mythologism, he has allowed the possibility of yet another self-orientalism to be produced. On the other hand, the discourse of mythologism proposed by Yang Lihui deals with the appropriation of myths or the use and reconstruction of myths in contemporary societies in a more strict sense, which requires continued attention, as it is currently a topic that is actively brought up and discussed within Chinese mythological world.
