This paper critically examines Ye Shuxian`s discourse on mythistory and jade. Mythistory and jade are the two most important ones in mythological approach to the origins of Chinese civilization. Discourse on this issue is ultimately aimed at expanding the time-spatiall range of Chinese history.
Ye Shuxian argues that it is necessary to construct the new concept of myth in the exploration on the origins of Chinese civilization in order to raise the status of mythology. He opposes to the past concept of myth based on literature-centered model while he treats myth as the cultural gene and cultural prototype codes. Above all, Ye Shuxian strongly criticizes modern Chinese scholars because they have largely ignored Chinese civilization`s core values. Therefore, Ye Shuxian advocates a paradigm shift in the academic community and he explores the core values of Chinese culture from the perspective of native special mythological resources. In this context, Ye Shuxian suggests a series of theories such as Great Tradition, Quadruple Evidence, and Mythistory. It means that he intends to link preliterate era with postliterate era. For this purpose, Ye Shuxian tries to take jade myth and the related faith as a legitimate subject matter to be studied. According to Ye Shuxian`s view, jade mythology can be the key to exploring the origins of Chinese civilization. He pays much attention to jade`s influence on the Chinese identity.
This paper focuses on Ye Shuxian`s view on the notion of "Jade Age", and examines the validity of his argument that jade faith is the "state religion" of China. Also, it reveals Sinocentrism inherent in Ye Shuxian`s logic. He emphasizes the function of jade as the sign of Chinese identity several thousand years prior to Qin Shi Huang"s unifying China. According to his view, jade faith is the earliest East Asia religion which appeared around 8,000 years ago in Xinglongwa Culture and became the sign of Chinese identity shared by many kingdoms and tribes surrounding the Central Plains.
Ye Shuxian indicates the cultural community that is trans-national borders, namely, "East-Asia civilization" deduced from the research on Chinese prehistoric jade articles. He says, "East-Asia civilization, whose body was the Chinese civilization and developed in surrounding areas." This statement is clearly self-contradiction and shows Sinocentrism. In his discourse, there is a contradiction between international universality and Chinese particularity. It is a manifestation of Sinocentrism. This is why Ye Shuxian`s discourse on jade is problematic.
