This essay explores both Ophelia the heroine of Hamlet and Yeats’s Crazy Jane, the heroine of the seven Crazy Jane poems. Proving they have the license to speak out freely, which is the fool’s representative right, it demonstrates that Ophelia in a state of madness and Crazy Jane function as female fools through a comparative analysis of Ophelia’s ballads and “Crazy Jane and the Bishop” the first poem of the Crazy Jane series.
In the first place, Ophelia is discussed focusing on her transformation after getting mad. Ophelia in her madness alludes to the corruption of the Denmark court and indicates the discordant sexual desire of the society by singing ballads. In other words, Ophelia’s madness functions as the license to criticize the world without restraints like the fool’s motley coat.
On the basis of the argument that Ophelia in her madness acts like a female fool, this essay manifests Crazy Jane also functions as a female fool though she is derived from Yeats’s poem, not from his play. In the case of Crazy Jane, her resistance is closely linked to the contemporary Irish situation. In the Catholic Free State, the repressive sexual morality and culture suppressed Irish people and threatened especially the freedom of the intellect. Crazy Jane strongly expresses the criticism of such repressive circumstances. The motley coat of madness makes it possible for her to speak out just as in the case of Ophelia.
