The purpose of this article is to approach Pearl Buck’s Alienation and Literary Tradition in her work focusing on The Good Earth. Pearl Buck was born in the United States of America and lived in China for a very long time. American main writers and critics didn’t pay close attention to her works even after her return to her native country after being exiled from China in 1934. Though she received a Nobel Prize in 1938, she became an almost forgotten writer in the turbulence of modern American and Chinese politics and nearly disappeared from the American literary scene.
Cargill indicates that Buck’s literary origin has exposed Naturalism. In her The Chinese Novel, she affirms that she was born and reared in the tradition of the Chinese novel and her object is to entertain common people. Pearl Buck learned the Western literary tradition through her mother and self-study. She inherited the main stream of Naturalism.
Pearl Buck’s works show the fact that the English literary tradition is linked to the European literary tradition, which is shown in “A Debt to Dickens” in 1934. The American literary tradition succeeds to the English literary tradition. Her works show diversity, flexibility and openness which are the common characteristics of American literature. That is why we should now view Pearl Buck as part of the cannon based on American literary tradition.
