The purpose of this study is to explore the factors related to the depression of widows with unmarried adult children. The death of a spouse is the top-ranked stressful life event. In particular, due to gender discrimination, parental responsibility, and the typical family ideology in Korean society, widows seem to be particularly depressed after a spouse passes away. This study used the 6th Korean Longitudinal Survey of Women & Family data (2016) to examine the depression-related factors of widows with unmarried adult children through the OLS regression model with SPSS 23.0 program. The results are as follows. First, the depression levels of widows with unmarried adult children is below the moderate level. They thought that parents have to support their adult children. They did not agree that adult children have to support their elderly parents and displayed a neutral attitude toward traditional gender roles, while agreeing with traditional marriage norms. Most participants did not have conflicts with their children, parents, and siblings. Second, the depression level of widows with unmarried adult children positively corresponded to high levels of parental responsibility, traditional marriage norms, and conflicts with their children and siblings. Parental responsibility and conflicts with children and siblings were major burdens while traditional marriage norms caused participants to consider their lives as abnormal and deficient. In sum, it is necessary to change their perspectives towards their parental responsibilities for their adult children and to learn how to solve conflicts with their children and siblings through family life education programs. The typical family ideology need to be eliminated by cultural movements and social policy changes.
