This paper aims to uncover how the mobility of propaganda plays is actualized and constructed within the colonial reality by focusing on the performance and production of “travelling theatre corps” and “paper theatre,” which were the representative “travelling” theatres during the late Japanese occupation period. These two types of propaganda plays were both predicated on “travel” or “mobility,” but staged with different size, theatrical devices and performance strategies. They were the “travelling” stages for the empire which went on until the end of the Second World War. Travelling theatre was planned according to the imperial policy handed down from the center, but the actual performance was given at farming, mountain, and fishing communities in remote regions. This temporal and spatial gap made it almost impossible to capture the reality of its performance. Based on a new source of primary material, this paper will first reconstruct the reality in which the travelling theatre was staged. Also, by tracing the process in which paper theatre was employed as a propaganda media by the authorities of Japanese empire from the script selection, set design and actual performance, this paper will add to the conversation on paper theatre, which may not have been a frequent research topic so far. In doing so, it could be confirmed that both the travelling theatre and paper theatre were particular genre of performance that contributed to delivering the ideological signification of the empire in the late colonial period.
