This study attempts to investigate the role of frequency in language change by examining linguistic knowledge regarding semantic compatibility between Korean dative construction [NP1-ul NP2-eykey V] and its co-occurring verb, and the resolution of their incompatibility (i.e., coercion). In the experiment, during five input sessions, four groups of native speakers of Korean read passages where five sentences, belonging to one of the four coercion categories ([no/mild/strong/impossible] coercion), are embedded. They also judged acceptability scores for the sentences of different degrees of coercion before (Pretest) and after (Posttest) the input sessions. As a result, the speakers who experienced ‘mild coercion’ during the input sessions, judged the coerced sentences more natural in the Posttest. In the follow-up test which was conducted three months after the Posttest, the effect of frequency existed, with no group difference. The study demonstrates that constant and frequent experience of slightly ungrammatical expressions is one of the mechanisms of language change.
