As a method to analyze the safety of software systems, “STAMP” is drawing attention. This is an accident model focusing on the interaction of modules and control; it enables more rational assessment than that which can be obtained by FTA or FMEA, which are conventionally used programs for software safety assessment, etc. Although a huge amount of work is needed to assess a software program with FMEA, we cannot erase concern about scenario rationality or how software failure influences safety. Similarly, when we use FTA, we can extract fatal factors with a topdown approach, but we cannot find an effective answer to the question of how actual software modules influence the generation of such factors. In addition, safety and reliability assessment of a whole railway system is required to satisfy the RAMS standard (IEC62278), for which quantitative analysis is needed for assessment of safety. In this paper, we will take examples of conventional safety analysis for railway signaling, organize the characteristics of these analysis methods and describe the procedures to effectively take advantage of each analysis method to assess the safety of a railway system.
