In this paper, the core of the thinking of Being in Heidegger’s philosophy - unfolded under the title of “getting over metaphysics” – is understood as an attempt to ground philosophy as “representational thinking of beings” in the “keeping in mind Being itself”. Based on this understanding, it can be said that Heidegger’s attempt to ground philosophy concurs with that of Hegel and Schelling in proposing that the grounding of philosophy explains the “necessity and essence” of philosophy from the “original essence of truth.” This introduces the question of what is the “original essence of truth”. Based on discussions unfolded in Heidegger’s On the Essence of Truth, Hegel’s Phenomenology of Spirit and Schelling’s System of Transcendental Idealism, this paper intends, first, to reveal their original essence of truth, and how philosophy attains its “necessity and essence” from the “original essence of truth.” However, what is problematic here is that although they all agree with the way to ground philosophy in a broader view, they differ from each other and are even critical of one another in detail. These situations are caused by the differences in their understanding of the original essence of truth. And these differences make Heidegger criticize Hegel’s and Schelling’s philosophy as the “metaphysics of subjectivity”. Thus, our attempts to explain the differences of their understanding of the original essence of truth are not only to consider their philosophy comparatively but also to examine the validity of Heidegger’s critique on Hegel’s and Schelling’s philosophy. So, this paper intends, second, to uncover the similarities and differences in their understanding of the original essence of truth. Especially arresting is the similarity between Heidegger’s and Schelling’s understanding of the original essence of truth and their difference from Hegel’s understanding. Thus, based on this understanding, this paper lastly intends to show whether Heidegger’s critique of German Idealism including Schelling as metaphysics of subjectivity is valid and, if so, to what extent.
