This study investigated the effects of discussion using multicultural picture books on the young children's emotional intelligence and caring thinking ability. The subjects for this study were 40 five-year-old children, and from separate classes of two child-care centers located in Gwangju. The children were divided into two groups ; the experimental group was given multicultural picture books, the comparison group was given traditional picture books. The study consists of the preliminary study, pretest, eight-week treatment, and posttest. A t-test was conducted to analyze the effect of discussion using multicultural picture books on children. The results of this study are as follows. First, the experimental group was found to have improved overall emotional intelligence. The experimental group also ranked significantly higher than the comparison group in sub-scales(young children's self-control ability, others-awareness ability, others-control ability). Second, the experimental group was found to have improved caring thinking ability. These findings suggest that discussion using multicultural picture books can be an effective teaching/learning method for improving young children's emotional intelligence and caring thinking ability.
