D. H. Lawrence occupies an uniquely important place in the development of modern American poetry after the Second World War. Although Lawrence is a part of the American poetic tradition, his role is often obscured under American poets, Walt Whitman, William Carlos Williams and Ezra Pound. By far the most important influence on his poetry was Whitman, and it was in large part through Lawrence that Whitman was brought into twentieth century, for Lawrence was the first major poet to make extended use of Whitman's stylistic discoveries. Because Lawrence was a pioneer in developing a distinctly American mode of writing, many American poets have looked to him for direction and encouragement. As poets in the 1950s and 1960s increasingly felt the limitations of traditional form, many looked for a way out. For them, Lawrence has remained as a challenging resource and a representative of artistic possibility. Lawrence wanted to break out of the prisons that restrained and repressed the poetical form. Lawrence thought that Whitman’s free verse, which is direct utterance from the instant, whole man, might break the chains of form in poetry. Always he sought authenticity; and he knew that, in order to be authentic, he had to be free to state his feelings of the moment, to be spontaneous, to speak out of instinct and intuition, to allow the voice of the self to be heard as the clamor of conformity. It is this distinct quality of voice, direct and open, free to speak what it feels, that is one of his most important legacies to many American poets. It is not poetry as art that mattered, but poetry as expression, unfinished though it may appear.
