This article explores the memory and oblivion of gender on Korean War, 1950- 1953. I interviewed 11 women and 7 men who experienced the War. Their experiences and memories on Korean War were varied in gender, class, age and regional backgrounds. The military armies of two Korea (south and north Korea) temporarily occupied one anther’s territories, which inevitably resulted in killing peoples under the dominant ideologies. They were forced to forget some of experiences and to shape some memories on the War by the ideology of anti-communism after the War. What is the differences of memories? What is female memory on the War? What was the last refuge for women to survive? What aspect of women’s sexual life was changed by the fear of war? The different experience on the War shaped the difference of memories which has been constructed by the gender system in patriarchical society after the War. The dominant gender ideals forced women to keep feminity. Though gender ideals was certainly influential, it had been challenged by some women who remained their post as saleswomen in the open markets. This paper contributes the development of the women’s oral history subject and of the existing research on the Korean War.
