This study provides narratological characteristics of Kang Sho-cheon’s full-length fairy tales by analyzing the Kang Sho-cheon’s, “Village Where the Sunflower Blooms” in terms of layered stories, characters and narrations.”
First, “Village Where the Sunflower Blooms” is narrated in a unitary story structure, based on Jung-hee’s narration, and can be defined not only as a ‘consecutive plot’ in time sequence, but also as a ‘fortunate plot.’ In the present work, ‘Jung-hee’ finds courage and hope to overcome bitter trials while reconnecting family ties that were dissolved due to the Korean War. She unravels a complicated matter among her friends, thereby suggesting a prospect of resolving the matter.
In addition, poor s and rich characters are described as opposing each other, thereby questioning the historical and social problems confronting the dissolution of family relations directly after the Korean War. This simultaneously generates ideological significance, importing that interest and love such as recovery of family relations are extremely urgent to children. In this regard, other significances are built in that children can live bravely, fairly and hopefully.
In the meantime, “Village Where the Sunflower Blooms” is narrated through multiple focalization that primarily include external and internal focalizations, thereby featuring “narration outside the story — zero focalization — others’ story” by which various characters can be focalized. By virtue of these focalizations and narrations, the values and world views of imported writers can be understood by maintaining a friendly and affirmative attitude of narration with respect to ‘Jung-hee’ as a heroine and characters maintaining friendly relations with her.
