This paper explores how genealogies are being used in western European historical demography. Four fields are identified in which genealogical material plays an important role. The first is the reconstruction of long-term shift in demographic regimes, for which other source material is often not available. The second is the study of geographical (and social) mobility in the past, using the places where vital events have taken place. The third is biodemography-the emerging field where evolutionary biology, genetics and family history intersect. Genealogies can help to understand, for instance, how exceptional longevity can cluster in families. Finally, the creation and visualization of genealogies offer prospects for new advances in digital humanities.
