Western culture has a long history of documenting and storing music sources. In Korea, by comparison, there is hardly any music archive that serves the expected functions of a music archive. Ideally, primary music sources, which form the basis of music archives, should be preserved and a cataloging process must be conducted based on the unique features of the music sources to provide information necessary for active research and musical performance. Nevertheless, music sources in Korea are generally presented through categorization or annotation specified by the general literature reference information system. In the West, music archives are considered to be essential, not optional, for the preservation of musical heritages and the proliferation of relevant research and performances. The objective of this paper is to argue that the establishment of proper music archives is essential for eradicating the fundamental problems of the music scene in Korea. In order to achieve this objective, the paper introduces the cases of Western music archives to explain the basic aspects of a proper music archive, discusses the changes that current music archives are facing in the digital environment of today, and proposes the facts and actions that we should consider and take in order to establish music archives.
